Philadelphia-Area ColdFusion User Group Receives Guidance on Performance Testing

Newark, New Jersey - January 23, 2002
On January 17th, 2002, OpenDemand Systems' founder and CEO, Donald Doane, addressed the Philadelphia-area ColdFusion User Group at Penn State Great Valley, focusing on the group's need to load/stress test applications and sites developed using ColdFusion.

To assure the "immediacy" of the Internet, web sites and web-based applications built using ColdFusion must demonstrate proven speed (performance), quality, and scalability. As such, CF Developers must test and measure how fast Web-system components work together, so they can determine what kind of workload their Web servers can withstand; how many simultaneous hits the Web site/application can handle; how scalable their applications and hardware are; and how this affects quality and performance. This "load" testing process must be implemented during and post development, as it is incredibly important to test sites and applications under heavy loads, to assure against slow access, or site failure due to varying limitations (including hardware).

Doane spent time with the group covering the needs and benefits of load/stress testing ColdFusion applications, and reviewed some of the industry's best practices with them as well.

The presentation was "very good," quoted one of the attendees. "I learned what load testing is and what its benefits are."

As part of a later case study, Doane used OpenLoad, the Company's proprietary Load and Stress Testing software, to demonstrate the need for load/stress testing, while displaying the ease of OpenLoad when used to test ColdFusion applications in any environment.

"We were grateful to Donald Doane and the OpenDemand team for presenting such a useful tool to the group," said Stephen Rittler, head of the Philadelphia-area ColdFusion User Group. "Many developers do not know where to begin with load testing or are not aware of the tools one could use. OpenLoad certainly opened the eyes of the group to the fact that load testing may not be as difficult or expensive as we may have thought."

About OpenLoad
If you know that the web site or application built using ColdFusion works for one user but don't yet know how the application scales for a multitude of users, then OpenLoad is for you.

OpenLoad is aimed at developers who want to test as they develop - without having to wait to use expensive equipment and software to see whether their ideas are correct. It is aimed at development and test teams who need to know that their application will withstand the loads predicted when it goes live.

The tool is 100% web-based (no download required at all), AND - using its proprietary web-based Recorder - requires absolutely NO scripting knowledge at all to record user profiles. In addition, this patent-pending Recorder can capture and translate any user action from any website and web application - something that has not been simple to do using other products. The tool is available to customers as an appliance (software/hardware bundle) that plugs directly into their network, or as a one-time/multi-use service that resides on our network. Both solutions are extremely cost-effective (specifically when compared to other load testing tools), easy to use, offer the best-of-breed load testing features (similar to other best-of-breed technologies - although much easier to use), can handle high simultaneous user testing (up to 1000 users or more), and provide highly accurate results and Analysis.
